Minutes of the SCC meeting held on Sunday, April 17, 1994 Attending: Brent, Jeremy, Jodi, Sara, Laurie, Scott, Jessica The meeting opened with devotions by Sara. 1. Treasurer's Report: Not much happened in the student account last month. 2. Committee reports. Outreach held their group phoning night to students living off-campus and that went well, attracting at least one new student to worship. Worship: Calvin DeWitt will be speaking at the Earth Day service April 20. Social Activities: Latin dancing follows the community potluck being held Friday (April 22). Laurie suggested making the last potluck (May 13) into a dress-up affair with dancing. This would provide for a social event similar to the Spring Banquets (which have been stopped now that we hold the study retreat), but without as much work. Directing Committee: Some of the younger DC members are interested in occasionally accompanying the SCC outreach committee on calling nights. Staff: Laurie went to Penn State to participate in their Campus Ministry review. They organize 20 minute concerts followed by brown bag lunches at their center, providing a chance to welcome a larger community. They also give out plastic tumblers to students (as we give out memo boards and pencils). These might be good ideas to try here. Brent and Jodi went to the LCMWUM board meeting. The campus ministry staff there felt that the LCMWUM board had no strong direction for campus ministry in the coming years; the board seemed to be talking about just maintaining the current programs or even reducing them. But campus ministry has traditionally been on the cutting edge, so various campus ministry staff plan to get together to discuss new directions for campus ministries. Our third staff member is not actually cut: the position is just unfilled right now, and could be filled whenever we get enough money. LCMWUM allocated $5000 to hire someone on an interim basis. We might be able to supplement that enough to hire someone part time. 3. The Lutheran Student Movement retreat was held with the Midwest Christian Retreat. That meant there were many people there and LSM didn't need to do all of the planning, but it was more expensive and had a different feeling than other retreats. 4. SCC elections will be held April 27th. We discussed possibilities of who to encourage to run, giving us candidates or possible candidates for all of the positions. 5. The fall planning meeting is May 7, 9 A.M. to noon. The Center will provide breakfast, perhaps bagels and donuts. 6. The Sunday worships so far have attracted about 7-10 students, not including staff and the Good News Singers. It's too late in the school year to work at drawing more, since students are starting to worry about finals now. We could go all out in the fall with advertising to bring in a larger crowd then. 7. The Study Retreat is happening soon! Cost is $20. Tell your friends! 8. We discussed the possibility of getting a faculty advisor for the Campus Center. We think the advisor would be able to let us rent UW fleet vans and reserve University Club rooms for banquets. Brent will check to be sure of what the advantages are. There are a few faculty on the Directing Committee who we might be able to convince to help us that way. 9. The blood drive is this week (April 19-22). Brent has volunteered to bake a loaf of bread for everyone who donates. If 25 people donate, he will even cook an Italian dinner for all of them. 10. Boundary Waters: One person has already paid to go, even before we begin our high-powered recruitment.
