Minutes of the SCC meeting held on Sunday, March 20, 1994 Attending: Jon, Laurie, Brent, Jodi, Sara, Jeremy, Jessica, Scott, Krista The meeting opened with devotions by Jessica. 1. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted despite two typographical errors. 2. Treasurer's report: Jeremy distributed a year-end (January 31) report. Student budget finances look good, with almost $1000 left for the rest of the semester. 3. Committee reports. Outreach: The April outreach night was moved back to the 10th; the original date of April 24th wouldn't leave enough time for new people to join the Center community before exams. The committee will also do a phone calling night to off-campus prospects. Jessica suggested inviting any interested Directing Committee members along on a calling night, so we will. Worship: Earth Day worship service planning is continuing. We will invite Calvin DeWitt to speak at the service. Social Activities: The line dancing night attracted several new people along with a good crowd of regulars. On April 22nd, the community potluck will be followed by Latin dancing, possibly with Linda Jothen instructing. Since the dances have been so popular (and also open to those under 21, unlike bars with dancing), Laurie suggested holding them more often, probably twice a month, starting this Fall. Social Ministry: Thursday noon lunches are continuing and watching "The Eye on the Prize," a video documentary of the civil rights movement. Also, our blood drive will be April 19-22. Directing Committee: Phil Knutson, a former director of the Campus Center and an organizer of the national Lutheran Student Movement gatherings, has AIDS. Shall we honor him somehow? Our favorite idea is to sponsor a lecture series in his name covering topics he cared most about in his ministry: the church, music, and reaching the disenfranchised. Staff reported on the Steven's Point retreat. We will lose our recently approved third staff member and possibly 15% of our funding. With only Brent and Laurie on staff, we will be forced to cut some programs. What can we do about this? We believe the future is in the young people reached though the Campus Center ministry. How do we let others know about this? Many congregations don't know that the LCC exists, as indicated by the fact that we have been given the names of only about 25% of the ELCA students here in Madison. Perhaps we (along with the other Wisconsin campus ministries) should send letters to the members of Wisconsin congregations telling them that we exist, but only through their benevolence. We could also send personal notes from the students who benefit from the Campus Center. Also, the Sunday worship is starting April 10th. If that is well-attended, then we will know that we should have another staff member to help us reach that audience. 4. Laurie's and the LCC's review was extremely positive. The reviewers were impressed by the students and their enthusiasm. 5. The Lutheran Student Movement regional retreat is April 8-10. One topic is how to organize students to write to congregations to tell them how campus ministry budget cuts will affect the students. 6. Study retreat: Those who went last year should talk it up and let everyone know that people really do study during the retreat. 7. The Boundary Waters trip will leave Madison on Sunday, May 22nd to spend May 23-31 in the Boundary Waters. Cost is $200 plus transportation, and the trip is limited to 20 people. It will consist of four days at Wilderness Canoe Base followed by four days of canoeing. 8. Elections for next year's SCC will be April 27th, and the new officers will participate in the fall planning meeting on Saturday, May 7th, 9-12. 9. Laurie suggested setting up a hospitality committee to work at making the Center more hospitable to newcomers. The committee would be responsible for the Happy Half Hour before worship and the friendship pads during worship, and greet and talk to new people. Everyone should be aware that the best way to make new people feel welcome is to talk to them before and after the service, not let them sit alone at worship and supper, and not let staff be the only people greeting and talking to newcomers. Talking to newcomers makes them happy and gets them back. So do it!
