Minutes of the SCC meeting, Sunday, December 12, 1993. Attending: Jodi, Bryan, Sara, Brent, Jeremy, Scott, Laurie, Krista 1. We agreed that the Winter Banquet was fantastic. The only bad part was having just one and a half hours for dancing. Thanks go to Laurie for doing all the cooking. 2. The planning meeting generated lots of ideas for Spring activities. We scheduled mainly the social activities; other committees will plan their events later. Jan 26 is the first Wednesday worship of the spring semester. Jan 28 (Fri): Community potluck (it's not just for grad students anymore) followed by ice skating at Vilas park. Feb 9 (Wed): Bring-a-friend night at worship. Feb 11-12 (Fri and Sat) is a retreat with Ray McKeever at Bethel Horizons. On the 12th, Luther Memorial is having its Mardi Gras talent show. Feb 25 (Fri): Grad student potluck and pizza bakeoff followed by ballroom dancing for all (with instruction). Mar 11 (Fri): Potluck supper for all, followed by game night. Mar 25 (Fri): Spring break starts. Grad students will decide if they want to have a potluck then or not. Apr 8 (Fri): Potluck for all followed by game night. Apr 22 (Fri): Grad student potluck. Apr 29-31 (Fri-Sun): Study retreat at Bethel Horizons. May 8 (Sun): Bethel Spring Fling and Mother's day. May 13 (Fri): Community potluck--commiserate on the day before exams. Committee reports and news from the planning meeting: Worship committee has chosen the theme of Journeys for the semester. Social Ministry plans to take people to help Habitat For Humanity a couple times next semester. Bryan may drive people to the work site as he did this fall. Fridays at noon, men's and women's groups will meet for an hourlong brown bag lunch. Some days the groups will meet together, some days separately. The first topic for discussion, starting Jan. 28, is the ELCA report on human sexuality. Brent really wants to hold Wednesday evening fireside chats about once a month with local or campus figures, so he will organize it. Mary Rouse will come if her schedule permits. Brent would like to invite David Ward and also Barry Alvarez (who is evidently a Lutheran, although nonpracticing). Other possibilities include Paul Soglin (but do students care about local politics?), Vernor Sumi (a famous meteorology professor), or people to discuss medical ethics, international issues, or other religions. In education news, Jodi will offer spiritual directions and accupressure massage classes again. Laurie wants to have a class using "Baptized We Live", a series discussing what Lutherans believe. She needs someone to go around at supper and invite and push people to attend. The fall planning meeting will be held in the morning of Saturday, May 7th.
