Minutes of the SCC meeting, Sunday, November 21, 1993. Attending: Jessica, Carl, Laurie, Jeremy, Jodi, Sara, Brent, Krista, Jon, Scott 1. Feedback on the retreat (September at Bethel Horizons): It was a good experience, and we would like to do it again next year. We noticed a real sense of helping others and working together on the challenges. 2. Lutheran Brotherhood Fund drive: We achieved our goal and raised $2560, including the $500 matching grant. 3. Blood Drive: 13 people donated, short of our goal of 15. However, several potential donors were sick that week and some may not have been recorded as donating for the LCC drive. Jessica will organize another one this Spring. 4. Committee Reports: Outreach: They were well-received on their last calling night. They also held a brunch after the worship service here on Sun, Nov 7 (the service replacing the one Luther Memorial did not have at 11:00 that day). Several new people were at the brunch and were invited to come to Wednesday worship. Worship: They have chosen to use the Holden Vespers service for the first two weeks of Advent, Dec. 1st and 8th, and to make a Jesse tree as they did last year. The Dec. 15th service (the last one before Christmas) will be a service of lessons and carols for Christmas. Recent special events were the healing service and liturgical dance following the workshop. Fine Arts: Carl is becoming a Stephen Minister and unfortunately will resign as Fine Arts chair. Jodi reported on the liturgical dance workshop: several of the 12 participants were from outside the LCC community, a good chance for reaching out. Social Ministries: Bethel is serving a meal at the homeless shelter. This gives us an opportunity to help, even though we stopped our monthly volunteering there. Education: Brent finished his series, and wonders whether there is a better time than after cost supper to hold classes. Are students unwilling to spend another hour in a class after two hours of worship and supper? There was no strong opinion either way, although Friday at noon was suggested since there were several people for the post-Oxfam pancake break-fast. Staff has discussed having speeches or discussions with campus or community figures such as Mary Rouse, David Ward, Stu Jackson, or Barry Alvarez. We decided that the first Wednesdays of February, March, and April would be good days to try this. Social Activities: Krista suggests going to the Elvehjem's African Art exhibit on Dec. 1st after supper. They may only be open until 8:00, so timing might be hard. She will check and decide. Directing Committee: Luther Memorial will be doing renovations next April to December, so they will likely want to borrow space from us. We will want to know well in advance to avoid conflicts. They and our other council churches would like to interact more with the LCC; we and they will keep this in mind. On Sat., January 29th the SCC is invited to a retreat/meeting to discuss the future makeup of the Directing Committee: several members are retiring, giving a chance for changes. Staff Report: LCMWUM has approved a third staff member, so we need to write a job description. We hope to have the new ordained staff member by July 1st. This raises the possibility of doing nontraditional Sunday worship services on campus, reaching a new group of students. To best reach students, we think the service should be late (11:00) and centrally located. Meeting at Memorial Union would be great, even though we could not guarantee the same room every time. The Union is a well- known, reasonably central location on campus. These Sunday services are tentatively planned to begin after Spring break. Treasurer: Jeremy passed out a list of student account activity. The different committees have widely different funding needs, so the original allocations of $100 to each committee will have to be modified. We expect to make a budget after the planning meeting. 4. The worship committee wonders whether we need to have Eucharist every Wednesday. If not, it might open up possibilities for different services. Some students will want communion every week, some don't care. In any case, we will have to talk a lot more before changing the current practice. 5. Winter Banquet is Dec. 10th at the Madison Senior Center; tickets cost $7. There is a group organizing everything, including performers. There is nothing the SCC has to plan. 6. There are currently five people signed up to go to Toronto on the Lutheran Student Movement retreat. 7. The Happy Half Hour before Wednesday worship was organized by the worship committee last year. But they are busy organizing worship, so would like someone else to do it. We will rotate the duty among SCC members; it should take two people only about 10 minutes.
