Minutes of the SCC meeting, Sunday, October 18, 1992. Attending: Barbie, Laurie, Tom, Jodi, Larry, Andy, Dave, Kathy, Tim, Sara, Kevin, Scott The meeting opened with devotions by Andy. 1. Correction to the previous minutes: the LCC retreat is scheduled for two weeks after Labor Day, Sept 18-19, 1993, not the weekend after Labor Day. 2. We still have no candidates for Fine Arts chair, and there is still no Good News Singers representative. Kathy Cottingham is now the vice chair. 3. LBH Fundraising report: we have a total of $721 so far. Letters will be sent to old Directing Committee members requesting donations. Donations are due by the beginning of November, not Sept. 30 as previously reported. 4. Blood Drive: Barbie will meet with a Red Cross representative soon to set a date and more details. 5. Welcome banquet: the LM banquet committee has agreed with our request to do a separate LCC welcome banquet; LM will then do their own welcome brunch. 6. Committee Reports Outreach: New meeting time is 1:00 Wednesdays. They plan an outreach calling night (with more than just Outreach members involved) after supper on October 28. Worship: The happy half hour is going well. Future possibilities are a liturgical dance; writing our own Advent or Lent worship service; a Jesse tree for Advent; bring-a-friend night; and posting fliers to increase turnout. Fine Arts: Next month's exhibit is "Peace Saints" Social Ministries: This month, they continue their political topics. Next month's topics are hunger and homelessness. They are also organizing an order to Earth Care paper; all are invited to take part and get a discount on recycled paper products. Education: Jodi's class ends soon, and then Tom begins his 5 week class on "John's Little Gospels", 1, 2, and 3 John. Social Activities: Make Noise night was a success. The next party is on Halloween, Oct. 31 at 8:00. Highlights will include bobbing for apples and pumpkin carving (bring your own pumpkin to keep the cost down). Directing Committee: The candidate who was going to visit dropped out, so interviews will continue. Staff Report: Tom reminded us of the national LSM retreat Dec. 30 to Jan 3. in Milwaukee. Laurie told us about the upcoming regional LSM retreat the first weekend of November at Menominee/Stout. The LCC is hosting a regional LSM retreat in April, and organizing it will take help. Cost suppers have not been taking in as much money lately, because attendance has been down. We decided to give the cooks less money and have them cook less food. 7. Worship committee suggested rethinking how we introduce new people at worship. It can be intimidating to make someone stand up his first time visiting, scaring off new people after only one worship. We discussed having some regulars introduce themselves first, or just doing away with the introductions entirely. Instead, though, we will try a longer sharing of the peace and ask worshippers to meet those sitting near them. Next month we will decide if this experiment worked, and whether to continue it or try something else. 8. The Friday video series has been well-attended, but takes a lot of time to organize every week. The organizers would like to do it once a month instead, getting a different volunteer to pick out and rent the movie. 9. It was suggested that the cost supper before Thanksgiving (Nov. 18) be an "Alternative Thanksgiving" with American Indian food. 10. The winter banquet will be December 5th at the Civic Center. Bethel and Luther Memorial will assist the LCC. 11. Offerings for November and December will be given to the Rodney Scheel House, except for Nov. 18. That is the day before the Oxfam fast, so we will give the offering, including the donations from those who fast on Thursday, to Oxfam. Those who fast are invited to break their fasts at the Lakefront Cafeteria on Friday (Nov. 20) at 8 AM.
